My Outdoor Transformation

Welcome to my Outdoor Living Space!

When we started building our home, we were excited to be able to spend more time outdoors because we had a much bigger backyard. One thing on my must have-list was a very spacious deck! I wanted an extension of my living space where I could relax and take in some fresh air and sunshine while watching the kids play.

The deck was originally built with hardwood but the builder didn’t stain or seal the deck. It was important to me to have the deck stained  to preserve the wood and ensure we get to enjoy this space for a long time. We decided not to stain/seal the deck immediately we moved in during the fall/winter in order to give the wood time to “rest”. As soon as spring was upon us, I sprung into action to complete this space.

For those wondering what staining and sealing of wood means- it is a technique which involves spraying the wood with a protective top coat to healp with its appearance and protect it from rotting. Here is some additional useful information.

After Staining

Staining

We decided to go with a dark brown stain from Sherwin Williams to match the darkest color on our brick. Before we started, we power washed the deck to remove any dirt residue that could affect the painting and ruin the smooth finish. The great thing about this stain is that it also acts as a seal on the deck which protects it from water damage.

Furnishing

I wanted comfortable but luxe/modern furnishings in this space which led to a hunt of a lifetime. The ones I liked were too expensive (*coughs* RH) and the ones within my price range were just OK. Then I found this Safavieh set on Perigold! It was at a good price point where I could stretch my initial budget a bit but looked so much more expensive. I loved the that the wood is made of teak and the cushions are removable and washable.
